A fine cased gilt brass English compass. Wonderful enamel dial face with many details. Original leather case.
Early 19th C.
The condition of this instrument is superb as it has remained in its original red leather case. The case has a few knocks and small splits but is essentially undamaged with its original brass hinge and two clasps. Unfortunately the wooden body of the case has warped slightly over the years and the case does not fully close although both clasps can be closed. The is a very well made suspension loop and behind that, a small lever which “cages’ the compass movement to prevent damage during transport.
